Beginning on Monday May 8th, RadioASB will showcase music from
Carolyn Hester's four decade music career as part of the RadioASB
promotion of her New York City concert performance. Carolyn's music
will air on both the "Carl Sabatino and the Morning Show",
broadcast from New York City and the "Morning Show West Coast
with Chuck & Joanna Schiele", broadcast from San Diego.
Folk singer songwriter Carolyn Hester, alongside folk artist giants
Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Phil Ochs and Tom Paxton, to mention just
a few, comprised the vanguard of the folk music phenomenon which
swept onto the American music scene in the early 1960's, eventually
engulfing an entire generation of socially and politically conscious
youth both here in America as well as overseas. The distinctly unique
folk style of Ms. Hester, which evolved as the result of the musical
influence of folk singer songwriters such as Pete Seeger, Woody
Guthrie, Burl Ives and the Weavers, in turn dramatically influenced
the American social, political and musical scene.
RadioASB Executive Vice President Richard F. Burrell relates, "We
at RadioASB are honored to cover Carolyn's New York City performance
and showcase the incredible talent and illustrious career of such
a truly unique American Folk icon." He continues, "Actually,
this is a continuation of an affiliation between Carolyn and RadioASB
which began when we covered her performance here in San Diego at
the 33rd Annual Roots & Folk festival in March of 2006. She
is one of the most genuinely sincere and gracious people that I
have ever had the pleasure to meet and work with, and her music
is most certainly a priceless American cultural legacy."
Carolyn embarked upon her musical career in New York City's Greenwich
Village during the tumultuous times of the early 1960's. It was
there in the Bleeker Street coffee shops that Carolyn began her
career, and it was there that she met a young singer songwriter
with an engaging harmonica style named Bob Dylan. Carolyn was impressed
with the then unknown Dylan, and asked him to play on her first
album, which she was recording for Columbia Records (recently re-released
as a Columbia Legacy CD). It was to be Dylan's first appearance
on a record. Carolyn introduced him to her producer, John Hammond,
who quickly signed Dylan to the label.
Carolyn Hester’s unique voice rang out from venues around
the USA as varied as the audience that came to listen to her folk
ballads, and she found herself at the forefront of the few but determined
folk singer songwriters who valiantly strived to raise social and
political awareness and effect change through music.
A native of Texas, Carolyn Hester is endearingly known to her fans
as the "Texas Songbird", although she now calls California
home. Right from the start of her career Carolyn received the unanimous
acclaim and rave reviews of noted music authorities from around
the USA. Robert Shelton, eminent folk music expert and author of
the Bob Dylan biography "No Direction Home" observed,
"Carolyn has a voice that instantly communicates a lyrical
gift, a disciplined control and arrestingly beautiful tone".
The accolades continued to pour in with each new performance. Winsor
French of the Cleveland Press commented, "Carolyn has a haunting
beauty, a voice like a flute and perfect pitch." Upon hearing
Carolyn at a concert in Charlottesville, Arthur Kyle Davis, Jr.
of the Virginia Daily Progress observed, "Her poise, naturalness,
purity, range and the warmth of her voice have completely won the
hearts of her audience."
Mr. Carl J. Sabatino, RadioASB host of the "Carl Sabatino
and the Morning Show" program broadcast from the RadioASB New
York City studio each weekday morning from Monday through Friday
will play host to Ms. Hester's performance at the Peoples' Voice
Café. Mr. Sabatino had traveled from New York City to San
Diego in order to spearhead the RadioASB coverage of Carolyn's performance
at the 33rd Annual Roots & Folk festival in March of 2006. Mr.
Sabatino, a long time New York City FM radio host comments, "I
am looking forward to once again cover Ms. Hester, having already
had the pleasure of interviewing her and witnessing her stellar
performance in San Diego".
As a special treat for the RadioASB audience Carolyn will appear
live on the "Morning Show West Coast with Chuck & Joanna
Schiele" for an entire two hour special program in June of
2006. This RadioASB special presentation will not only feature songs
personally selected by Carolyn that highlight her extensive folk
music career but also include her thoughts, reflections and fascinating
anecdotes related to folk artists that she has performed and recorded
with, such as Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton and Nanci Griffith.
The program will also include a live performance in the RadioASB
studio of several of her songs. The word backstage at RadioASB is
that Chuck Schiele will accompany Carolyn on guitar for a song or
two and may even provide a special arrangement of one of her songs.
In 2003 Carolyn Hester was the deserving recipient of the World
Folk Music Association's "Lifetime Achievement Award",
presented by Mr. Dick Cerri, host of the popular and long running
radio show "Music Americana". She has recently completed
a multi-city European tour, which included a performance at the
annual Bob Dylan Festival in Northampton as well as performances
in Spain and Scandinavia. Carolyn's concert appearance at Bob Dylan's
30th Anniversary Tribute Concert at New York City's Madison Square
Garden solidly reaffirmed her position in American folk music. She
has also extensively toured the North American continent and performed
at the Folk Alliance Tribute to Phil Ochs at the Rock 'n' Roll Hall
of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio.
Carolyn Hester's career has included numerous television and radio
appearances around the world. She was featured in the A&E "Biography"
program on the life and career of Bob Dylan. She performed as a
special guest on Folk artist Nanci Griffith's national tour and
was featured on Ms. Griffith’s Grammy award winning "Other
Voices, Other Rooms" and "Other Voices, Too" CD’s.
Carolyn regularly performs at the Annual Kerrville Folk Festival
in Kerrville, Texas and has also co-hosted the Kerrville Music Awards,
most recently with Texas music legend Ray Wylie Hubbard. She is
next scheduled to perform at the 35th Annual Kerrville Folk Festival
in Kerrville, Texas on Friday, June 9th, 2006.
Carolyn has not only received recognition in newspapers, magazines
and books worldwide but has also been featured on publication covers,
such as the Saturday Evening Post. She appears in the best-seller
"Positively 4th Street" by David Hadju; "Chronicles"
by Bob Dylan; Nanci Griffith's "The Making of Other Voices";
"On Record" by John Hammond; "Don't Think Twice,
It's All Right - Bob Dylan the Early Years" by Andy Gill; "Bob
Dylan: An Intimate Biography" by Tony Scaduto; "No Direction
Home"; Milt Okun's "Something to Sing About"; Rod
Kennedy's "Music From the Heart" and "Texas Rhythm,
Texas Rhyme" by Larry Willoughby.
Carolyn's performances nowadays often include songs from her vast
repertoire of Southwestern flavored originals as well as long standing
favorites from her well-received and extremely popular "A Tribute
to Tom Paxton" and "From These Hills" CD's, both
on the Road Goes On Forever record label.
