RadioASB Partner releases Jazz Icons™ DVD Series
San Diego, CA – September 26, 2006 - Syntarus Corporation,
a global telecommunications, radio broadcast programming and information
management technology firm based in San Diego, CA today formally
announced the official release of the first nine titles of the Jazz
Icons™ DVD Series by liaison partner Reelin’ In The
Years Productions LLC.
According to RadioASB Executive Vice President, Richard F. Burrell,
“The announcement marks the initiation of a nation-wide promotional
and marketing campaign implemented for Jazz Icons™ by Syntarus
subsidiary, RadioASB (American Songbook Radio), as the result of
our recently formed liaison with Reelin’ In The Years Productions
LLC.” He adds, “The release of the first nine titles
heralds the beginning of an on-going Jazz Icons™ DVD Series
featuring full length concerts and in-studio performances by the
greatest legends of jazz. The series is comprised of never before
released video footage filmed all around the world during the 50’s,
60’s and 70’s, and all of the footage has been meticulously
transferred from the original masters.”
The initial Jazz Icons™ DVD Series release consists of nine
titles:
• Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Live in 1958
• Dizzy Gillespie - Live in 1958 and 1970
• Louis Armstrong - Live in 1959
• Quincy Jones - Live in 1960
• Thelonious Monk - Live in 1966
• Buddy Rich - Live in 1978
• Ella Fitzgerald - Live in 1957 and 1963
• Count Basie - Live in 1962
• Chet Baker - Live in 1964 and 1979
Each Jazz Icons™ DVD features a 16-page booklet with an essay
written by an authoritative jazz historian as well as rare and unseen
photographs. All Jazz Icons™ DVD’s are produced with
the full support and cooperation of the artists or their estates,
who in most cases are contributing rare personal photographs, memorabilia
and forewords.
To commemorate the Jazz Icons™ DVD Series release renowned
American music impresario, Mr. Quincy Jones, issued the following
quote, “The release of the Jazz Icons™ DVD Series is
like the unearthing of a musical time capsule, an audio-visual treasure
trove of the music that changed the world. From Big Band and Bebop
to Dixieland and Cool, it’s all here and it all swings. These
jazz legends, from Dizzy and Count to Louis and Ella, are the Bachs
and Beethovens of our generation. From an educational standpoint
this series is a gift to our culture.” He adds, “I’m
honored to be a featured part of it, but I’m more thrilled
just to sit down and watch it with my grandkids.”
The multi-talented Mr. Quincy Jones, who is featured in the initial
Jazz Icons™ DVD Series release, is also an internationally
recognized bandleader, composer, solo artist, producer, arranger,
film composer and record label executive.
The Jazz Icons™ DVD Series release heralds a major milestone
in the world of Jazz for several reasons.
According to David Peck, President of Reelin' In The Years Productions
LLC, “The Jazz Icons™ DVD Series features concerts and
in-studio performances by the most pivotal and influential jazz
artists of the 20th century. This footage, filmed in Europe between
1957 and 1978, captures the greatest legends of jazz in their prime,
accompanied by some of the most legendary side-musicians of the
day.”
Tom Gulotta, Art Director at Reelin' In The Years Productions LLC,
relates, “This priceless footage was literally lost in the
vaults of European television studios, in some cases for nearly
50 years.” He continues, “Each of the nine Jazz Icons™
DVD’s feature one or more concerts filmed live in television
studios and concert halls throughout Europe during one of the most
creative periods in jazz history. None of these performances has
ever been officially released, and in many cases the material was
never originally broadcast. In addition, every performance in the
Jazz Icons™ DVD Series has been re-transferred and re-mastered
from the best-quality, original masters yielding excellent sound
and video.”
To quote noted jazz writer and historian, Ira Gitler (author of
“The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz”), “These
nine historic DVD’s are among the most important visual and
aural documents to be discovered in the history of Jazz. Most importantly,
they are now available to the entire world.”
Phil Galloway, Vice President of Reelin' In The Years Productions
LLC, notes, “Among the wealth of highlights in the Jazz Icons™
DVD Series are two incredible Quincy Jones concerts filmed in 1960
and featuring an 18-piece band comprised of some of the finest musicians
in jazz.”
The band, which Quincy later described as his “dream band”,
included Phil Woods, Clark Terry and Sahib Shihab.
Another highlight is a staggering one hour Art Blakey concert with
what many jazz historians consider to be his most important ensemble,
the legendary 1958 Jazz Messengers with Lee Morgan, Benny Golson,
Bobby Timmons and Jymie Merritt.
The Jazz Icons™ DVD Series also features two exceptional
concerts of Ella Fitzgerald including the earliest known complete
Ella show (filmed in Belgium in 1957) and an intimate in-studio
appearance from 1963 taped in Sweden with pianist Tommy Flanagan.
Also featured in the series are two superb Thelonious Monk concerts
from 1966 filmed just three days apart in Norway and Denmark.
Additional concerts included in the Jazz Icons™ DVD Series
include a riveting hour-long Count Basie show from Sweden taped
in 1962 and featuring the phenomenal drumming of Sonny Payne. Dizzy
Gillespie is represented by two historic concerts, the first from
1958 in Belgium with a quintet including saxophonist Sonny Stitt,
and the second from 1970 in Denmark fronting the legendary Kenny
Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band. The Buddy Rich DVD boasts a thunderous
1978 concert taped in Holland and featuring members of Buddy’s
“Killer Force,” the group he would later call “the
best band I ever had.” Chet Baker is represented by two concerts
filmed 15 years apart, including a haunting 1964 show in a Belgian
TV studio and a soulful 1979 set from Norway (together they provide
an overview of Baker’s career.) Rounding out the DVD series
is one of the only known complete Louis Armstrong concerts from
the 1950’s to be captured on film. This 1959 concert, filmed
in Belgium and backed by his stellar band the All-Stars, captures
the great man in all his glory as both a jazz pioneer and an entertainer
without peer.
Scott Chatfield, Vice President of Reelin' In The Years Productions
LLC, says, “Each Jazz Icons™ DVD in the series is produced
with the full support and cooperation of the artists or their estates.
In addition, each musician on stage is being paid, either directly
or through the American Federation Of Musicians.”
Each Jazz Icons™ DVD also includes a 16-page booklet with
an extensive essay written by illustrious and established jazz writers
and music historians such as Ira Gitler, Michael Cuscuna, Will Friedwald,
Rob Bowman and others. Each booklet also includes previously unseen
photos and memorabilia. In many cases the actual artists, or heirs
to their estates, have either provided rare, never before seen artifacts
or actively contributed to the forewords.
In the words of Jazz Icons™ DVD Series co-producers David
Peck and Phil Galloway of Reelin' In The Years Productions LLC,
“We are very proud to be able to share this historic and previously
unseen footage with the world at large, and we are looking forward
to releasing additional titles in the future.”
