RadioASB attends Jazz Icons Gala Premier in New York City
San Diego, CA – October 4, 2006 - Syntarus Corporation, a
global telecommunications, radio broadcast programming and information
management technology firm based in San Diego, CA today formally
announced that subsidiary RadioASB (American Songbook Radio) was
in attendance yesterday evening at the gala premier celebrating
the release of the Jazz Icons™ DVD Series held at the Frederick
P. Rose Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City on October 3, 2006.
According to RadioASB Executive Vice President Richard F. Burrell,
“The gala premier celebrated the release of the first nine
titles of the Jazz Icons™ DVD series by RadioASB liaison partner
Reelin’ In The Years Productions LLC, a San Diego based music
and video footage library company founded in 1992 with the goal
of preserving music performance footage from around the world and
making it available to the entertainment industry and the public.”
RadioASB was represented at the gala premier by Mr. Carl J. Sabatino,
host of the "Carl Sabatino & the Morning Show" program.
The program, which has become an indispensable staple for thousands
of RadioASB morning listeners nation-wide, serves up an engaging
blend of American Popular Standards, Jazz (classic and smooth),
Contemporary Rock and a touch of cross-over Country and can be heard
each weekday morning on RadioASB from 6:00AM to 10:00AM EST. Mr.
Sabatino was in attendance as a VIP guest of honor.
The evening kicked off in spectacular fashion with delicious hors
d'oeuvres, drinks and a special screening of selected clips from
the Jazz Icons™ DVD series. The audience was then treated
to an engaging presentation delivered by the Reelin' In The Years
Productions team which produced the Jazz Icons™ DVD series.
Mr. David Peck, President of Reelin' In The Years Productions LLC,
spoke about the impetus for the creation of the Jazz Icons™
DVD series as well as his relationship with European media company
TDK, which assisted in the project. Vice President Phil Galloway
elaborated on the cultural and educational importance of the footage
contained within the Jazz Icons™ DVD’s, and Art Director
Tom Gulotta discussed both the care which went into the visual look
and the relevance of the insightful essays and rare photographs
found in the pamphlets which accompany each DVD.
The team then played a video greeting from renowned American music
impresario, Mr. Quincy Jones. The multi-talented Quincy Jones, who
is featured in the initial Jazz Icons™ DVD release, is also
an internationally recognized bandleader, composer, solo artist,
producer, arranger, film composer and record label executive.
Mr. Carl J. Sabatino, a true jazz connoisseur who also serves as
Program Director at RadioASB, was especially thrilled by the evening’s
live jazz music lineup. He relates, “The gala premier featured
an evening of stellar entertainment that showcased the music of
Ben Riley’s Monk Legacy Septet, comprised of Ben Riley on
drums, who appears on the Jazz Icons “Thelonius Monk Live
in ‘66” DVD, Don Sickler on trumpet and arrangements,
Bruce Williams on alto sax, Wayne Escoffery on tenor sax, Jay Brandford
on baritone sax, Freddie Bryant on guitar and Kiyoshi Kitagawa on
bass.” He continues, “Sitting in were a number of very
special guests, including tenor saxophonist Frank Wess and trombonist
Benny Powell, both of whom appear on the DVD featuring Count Basie’s
New Testament band during a 1962 concert in Sweden. Alto saxophonist
Phil Woods and drummer Joe Harris regaled the crowd just as they
did back in 1960 as can be attested by their performance on the
Jazz Icons “Quincy Jones in 1960” DVD. Pianist Bob Kaye,
who formed part of Buddy Rich’s band on the 1978 DVD and bassist
Jymie Merritt, a member of the Moanin’ era Art Blakey and
The Jazz Messengers, took turns onstage and mesmerized the audience
with classic tunes that included the likes of Blue Monk, Bright
Mississippi, Corner Pocket, Moanin’ and Big Red.”
The evening was graced with the presence of celebrities that included
Angela Bassett and her husband Courtney B. Vance, both avid jazz
aficionados. Jazz At Lincoln Center’s Creative Director, Mr.
Wynton Marsalis was in attendance at the event along with special
guests Rudy Van Gelder, Jimmy Heath, Dr. Billy Taylor, Ron Carter,
Roy Haynes and Charlie Persip, among others.
It was truly a memorable gala premier event that was thoroughly
enjoyed by all!
