RadioASB initiates Epilepsy Awareness Promotion Campaign
San Diego, CA – November 15, 2006 - Syntarus Corporation,
a global telecommunications, radio broadcast programming and information
management technology firm based in San Diego, CA today formally
announced that subsidiary RadioASB (American Songbook Radio) has
initiated an “Epilepsy Awareness” promotion campaign
on behalf of the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County.
RadioASB Executive Vice President Richard F. Burrell explains,
“As the result of our recently formed liaison as media partner
with the Foundation, RadioASB will begin providing significant radio
promotion for the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County, their
services and events.”
Did you also know that one in every one hundred people in the United
States has Epilepsy, and that one third of the 125,000 new cases
each year begin in childhood? In San Diego alone there are 30,000
people suffering from Epilepsy.
The Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County is a private non-profit
health agency dedicated to the prevention and control of epilepsy
and is the only health agency providing services to the estimated
30,000 people in San Diego County afflicted with seizure disorders.
The foundation also offers extensive assistance designed to help
the families of victims cope with and overcome the problems associated
with this condition.
Originally established in 1954 as the Epilepsy Society with the
mission objective of providing epilepsy victims and their families
much needed support through education, research and service, the
foundation has since expanded with a wide variety of assistance
that includes individual and family counseling, career development,
vocational counseling, referral and individual advocacy; a parent
network, adult and parent support groups, in-service educational
seminars, a speakers bureau and classroom presentations. All of
these services are free and are available to anyone whose life is
touched by epilepsy, regardless of the severity of the disability
and without regard to race, creed, age, sex or nationality.
Apart from the direct physical effects of seizures, people with
epilepsy have to deal with a very special handicap - the misconceptions
of others. Many people believe that epilepsy means mental illness
or violent convulsions, and thus withdraw when they hear that someone
has epilepsy.
Some employers refuse employment opportunities for the same reasons,
even though the person with epilepsy might be qualified and thoroughly
capable of doing the job. As a result many people afflicted with
epilepsy, fearing embarrassment and prejudice, are afraid to be
open about their disorder.
Epilepsy affects people in many different ways, with some victims
subject to only a few seizures in a lifetime while others may need
constant medical supervision to gain control of their lives. Most
epilepsy victims have to deal with the negative medication side-effects,
overwhelming medical bills, unemployment, social rejection and lack
of independence. Fortunately, many epilepsy sufferers can lead highly
productive lives.
Goals of the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County include:
• Improve self-esteem and social skills in children and adults
with epilepsy
